Description

Oil and gas installations usually consist of fixed platforms where the exploitation of oil and gas occurs.

MSP Challenge

Oil & Gas Installations is a static data layer. They are points that you can place, edit or remove when making a plan.

Oil & gas installations create the following pressures on the ecosystem:

• Artificial substrate
• Noise
• Surface disturbance
• Bottom disturbance

The North Sea has become western Europe’s most important oil and gas production area, yielding high-quality crude oil with a low-sulfur content. The use of space for oil and gas extraction requires continuing attention. No shipping or other uses are allowed in a 500-metre zone around the platforms. This places local restrictions on the fishing industry, shipping and recreation (crafts). It is also not permitted to drag fishing nets over the seabed and in the water column in this 500m security zone. When choosing the location for a drilling platform, shipping and other uses must be taken into account. In clearways for shipping, mining activities are, in principle, not permitted. However, most of the interaction is with wind energy areas, especially with regard to helicopter safety zones.

None of the three fishing fleets (bottom trawl, drift and fixed nets, industrial and pelagic trawl) fish at oil & gas installations.

"The dataset on offshore installations for Oil and Gas exploitation and exploration activities was created in 2015 by Cogea for the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet). It is the result of the aggregation and harmonization of datasets provided by several EU and non-EU sources. It is updated every year, and is available for viewing and download on EMODnet - Human Activities web portal (www.emodnet-humanactivities.eu). The dataset contains points representing offshore installations and where available each point has the following attributes: ID, name, country, location block, operator, production start year, primary production, current status, category and function of the installation, sub-structure and topside weights (tonnes), water depth (metres), distance to coast (metres) and remarks. The OSPAR commission source covers data for Germany, Ireland, Spain and the United Kingdom, while for Italy data have been collected and harmonized from the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, for Norway from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, for Denmark from the Danish Energy Agency, for the Netherlands from the TNO - Geological Survey of the Netherlands, for Croatia from the Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency, from Marine Traffic and Helcom data on Polish and Russian installations in the Baltic Sea, from Marine Traffic data on Bulgarian, Russian and Ukrainian installations in the Black Sea, Lybian and Spanish installations in the Mediterranean Sea. Compared with the previous version this new version has been updated for all countries."

Western Baltic Sea

The Oil and Gas Installations layer in the Western Baltic Sea Edition remains consistent with that featured in the Baltic Sea edition.

Not applicable.

At the moment of development of the Clyde Marine Region edition (2017) there were no oil and gas platforms in the region, nor expectations that there would be such platforms in the future. Therefore this datalayer is not available in this edition of the MSP Challenge.

Due to the absence of oil & gas installations in the Mediterranean Sea there are two layers present, one is the oil & gas installations, for planning purposes and the other one are the existing boreholes.

2) Boreholes
