Information about each country can be viewed by clicking on the 'i' icon (see image below) on each country, this is information retrieved from wikipedia and other non-official sources as well as common knowledge.

The source countries' layer was combined with the source lakes layer and the geometries were simplified. In the course of the simplification process some smaller areas (islands) were removed.
