Description

Areas designated for depositing dredged materials.

MSP Challenge

Dumping dredged materials at sea contributes to the bottom disturbance pressure. The bottom disturbance can influence certain species present in the sea region.

Return to shipping.

In the North Sea region there is data regarding dumping areas that are no longer in use (closed dumping areas), and others that are still being used (open dumping areas).

Data Source

EMODnet Human Activities data portal data combined with data from the North Sea Atlas.

Original Title

The EMODnet data layer used was the "Dredge Spoil Dumping", the polygon-based layer was used.

From the North Sea Atlas, the dataset used was called "Baggerstortlocaties".

Description

The data layer from Emodnet had mostly data over the UK and Belgium coasts, while the North Sea Atlas had data for the Dutch coast.

For reference, we replicate here the abstract description from EMODnet regarding the Dredge Spoil Dumping (polygons) layer (EMODnet Human Activities data portal , accessed on 25-04-2022):

"The database on offshore Dredge dumping sites in the EU was created in 2015 by CETMAR for the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet). It is the result of the aggregation and harmonization of datasets provided by several sources. It is updated every year and is available for viewing and download on EMODnet Human Activities web portal (www.emodnet-humanactivities.eu). The database contains points and/or (where available) polygons representing offshore Dredge dumping sites in the following countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom. Each point and/or polygon has the following attributes (where available): INDEX_ID, Site name, Country, Dredge ID, Dredged material, Year of operation, Information provider, Distance to coast (m) and Distance from centroid to coast (m)(This last attribute only appears for polygon data). The distance to coast (EEA coastline shapefile) has been calculated using the UTM WGS84 Zone projected coordinate system where data fall in."

Creation Date

EMODnet: 2015-04-05

North Sea Atlas: not available, implemented on 2018/03.

Methodology

Both data layers used were reprojected to Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area (EPSG:3035) and combined in one single data layer.

Types

Not applicable. In the Baltic Sea there are no different types of dumping areas.

HELCOM HOLAS II Dataset: Deposit of dredged material sites points 2011-2016 (2018)

Original Title

Deposit of dredged material sites points 2011-2016.

Description

"This data set on deposition sites of dredged material (points) reported by HELCOM Contracting parties according to HELCOM recommendation 36-2 for the reporting period 2011-2016.

The dataset contains data reported by nationally by nominated experts by HELCOM PRESSURE group for Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden."

Description retrieved from HELCOM's metadata page for this resource (2021-07-19).

Creation Date

2018-01-15

Methodology

Edited as to not overlap the countries' layer implemented in the platform. For simplification purposes areas under 0,250km2 were removed from the dataset.
