Description

International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) standardise the division of sea areas for statistical analysis. Each ICES statistical rectangle is '30 min latitude by 1 degree longitude' in size which is approximately 30 nautical miles by 30 nautical miles (Because the Earth is a spheroid shape, the area of an ICES rectangle will vary by latitude).

Retrived from Marine Scotland on 2022/01/25.

MSP Challenge

The ICES rectangles are only used for reference. In case there are specialists in Biology or Fisheries in a session, this layer can help to reference an area while discussing (future) plans. This layer is only present in the North Sea Edition.
