Description

The passive demersal catch is a heatmap showing where the catch of the passive demersal fleets is more dense or less dense. The fleets considered as passive demersal are the ones using fixed or drift nets on or close to the seafloor.

MSP Challenge

Passive demersal catch is a month-by-month, computer-generated data layer following this fleet's fishing catch calculated by the ecosystem simulation. This fleet doesn't fish in areas that are protected against passive demersal catch.

A plan can also include a change in the fishing efforts for this fleet per EEZ. Activate the Fishing controls by ticking the appropriate checkbox under section 2b in the Plan Wizard. Subsequently, change the Fishing effort sliders under the Fishing tab of the Plan Details (maximize the Plans Monitor and select your plan)

Return to fishing.

This layer is not available in the North Sea Edition.

This layer cover the Baltic Proper area only.

In the Baltic Sea, the passive demersal fleets catch mostly:

Types

  • Very low density
  • Low density
  • Medium density
  • High density
  • Very high density

Data Source

The passive demersal catch data layer comes from the EwE model developed on purpose for MSP Challenge usage based on the model by Tomczak, M.T., Niiranen, S., Hjerne, O., Blenckner, T. (2012) with the invaluable contribution of Jeroen Steenbeek, Maciej Tomczak , Giovanni Romagnoni, Rikka Puntilla, Ville Karvinen and Magali Gonçalves.
