Sediment can include cobbles, pebbles, gravel, sand and mud or a combination of these.

For reference, sediment is classified taking into account particles' size and there are different classifications, for instance (European Environment Agency European, Topic Centre on Biological Diversity (2021):

  • gravel: 4 - 16 mm
  • coarse sand: 4 - 1 mm
  • medium sand: 1 - 0.25 mm
  • fine sand: 0.25 - 0.063 mm
  • mud: less than 0.063 mm
