Sediment can include cobbles, pebbles, gravel, sand and mud or a combination of these.

For reference, sediment is classified taking into account particles' size:

  • gravel: 16-4 mm
  • coarse sand: 4-1 mm
  • medium sand: 1-0.25 mm
  • fine sand: 0.25-0.063 mm
  • mud: less than 0.063 mm
