Benthos refers to the community of organisms that live on, in, or near the bottom of a sea, river, lake, or stream, also known as the benthic zone. This community lives in or near marine or freshwater sedimentary environments, from tidal pools along the foreshore, out to the continental shelf, and then down to the abyssal depths. As the name indicates, mobile benthos refers to species of benthos that can move, in opposition to sessile benthos which are attached to hard rocky substrate (wikipedia, n.d.).

Mobile benthos is a month-by-month, computer generated data layer following calculations made by the ecosystem simulation (EwE). The simplified EwE Eastern Mediterranean model was adjusted for use in the MSP Challenge by Eyal Ofir.
