We distinguish between “sand and gravel extraction” and “dredging” for MSP Challenge purposes. We define the first as the extraction of materials for coastal defence or construction, while dredging is defined as having the purpose of maintaining navigability.
Sedimentation may occur due to river influx and tides. Dredging sites are locations where sediment needs to be removed to enable or improve navigation. Dredging can occur periodically or sporadically.
Dredging sites can be edited and contribute to the following pressures on the ecosystem:

"Data set represents dredging activities around the Baltic Sea. The dataset contains information about the dredging activity and for some the type (capital, maintenance) and the year of activity as reported by HELCOM Contracting Parties in response to data request.
The dredging data is missing from Denmark."
