Description:
Fixed gillnets consist of a sheet of network stretched on stakes fixed into the ground, generally in rivers or where the sea ebbs and flows, for entangling and catching the fish. Drift nets are nets which are not anchored. They are usually gillnets, and are commonly used in the coastal waters of many countries.
MSP Challenge 2050:
Drift and Fixed Nets Catch is a month-by-month, computer generated data layer following this fleet's fishing efforts calculated by the ecosystem simulation. This fleet doesn't fish in areas that are protected against drift and fixed nets.
A plan can also include a change in the fishing efforts for this fleet per EEZ. Activate the Fishing controls by ticking the appropriate checkbox under section 2b in the Plan Wizard. Subsequently change the Fishing effort sliders under the Fishing tab of the Plan Details (maximize the Plans Monitor and select your plan).
The Drift and Fixed Nets fleet catches numerous of the larger species, including:
- Cod
- Mackerel
- Flatfish
- Demersal fish
- Demersal predators
- Sandeel and sprat
- Many other species
